This homemade coffee soap recipe is made using real coffee! Not only does the coffee in this cold process soap recipe naturally help to neutralize tough odors on hands from cooking, the natural caffeine present in coffee also possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties. Coffee has a number of natural benefits for skin care. Not only is coffee soap perfect for use in the kitchen to remove strong odors from hands, it also helps skin in other ways.

As the caffeine in coffee acts as a natural anti-inflammatory, it may also help to reduce the appearance of redness or rosacea. In addition, it is believed that the enzymes found in coffee’s natural oils can aid in detoxifying and cleansing skin. Therefore, it is a great choice for those who are prone to acne or other skin conditions such as eczema.

Tips for Using Coffee to Make Soap

My homemade coffee soap recipe is made using the cold process soap recipe and a strong brewed espresso coffee. Similar to other ingredients used in soapmaking such as coconut water, beer and milk, coffee can cause an unpleasant reaction if lye if not properly chilled prior. Therefore, to make this homemade coffee recipe simpler for those just getting started in soapmaking, this coffee soap recipe has you first mix your lye with a discounted amount of distilled water instead of with the coffee.

Ingredients to Make Coffee Soap:

These are the ingredients you will need to make homemade soap using brewed coffee:

6 oz. 76° melt point refined coconut oil
3.6 oz. safflower oil
8 oz. rice bran oil
2 oz. sesame oil
13 oz. sustainable palm oil
2.4 oz. palm kernel flakes
6 fl. oz. distilled water
4.9 oz. lye/sodium hydroxide
5.8 fl. oz. extremely strong brewed coffee

Here is additional information on this coffee cold process soap recipe to help you resize the batch or make additional changes:

Superfat=8%
You can keep this homemade coffee soap recipefragrance free. However, if you prefer to scent your homemade soapyou can add up to 1.1 oz. of essential oil for a natural scent or up to 2.25 oz. of your favorite fragrance oil such as Brambleberry’s espresso fragrance oil. (You can also find a great scent blend using this fragrance combined with a few others here.) For this homemade coffee soap recipe I actually used a kahlua flavor oil I had on hand that worked perfectly. I specifically used the kahlua flavoring oil from Nature’s Garden at .8 oz. which was just enough to add a bit of sweetness to this homemade soap without being overpowering.
If you don’t wish to use palm oil and/or palm kernel flakes you can substitute the palm oil for lard (pig tallow) and the palm kernel flakes for coconut oil. However, you’ll need to run the resulting soap recipe back through a lye calculator. In addition you can also substitute the rice bran oil with olive oil.
This natural homemade coffee soaprecipe will fit inside my DIY wooden loaf soap moldand will yield 10-12 bars depending on how thick you cut them.

How to Brew Coffee to Make Homemade Soap:

To make the strong coffee like “concentrate” I used to make this coffee soap, I brewed coffee using 8 oz. distilled water and 8 Tablespoons of Gevalia espresso roast coffee in my automatic drip coffee maker. However this would work just as well using a French press. Once the coffee was brewed, I poured the coffee back through the coffee maker for a second time to brew it again. I then refrigerated my coffee overnight.

Alternately, if you’re not a coffee drinker and don’t own a coffee maker, you could an actual coffee concentrate.

How to Make Coffee Soap

To make this natural homemade coffee soaprecipe, you’ll need to follow your basic cold process soapmaking method instructions.(If you’ve never made cold process soap before here’s a good, inexpensive beginner’s cold process soap recipe.) Be sure to take all proper safety precautions when working with lye including goggles and gloves.

To make coffee soap, follow these instructions:

Begin by measuring out the distilled water in fluid ounces. Pour into a heat safe pitcher. Next, using a digital scale weigh out the lye. Slowly pour the lye into the water in a well ventilated area and stir until all the lye has dissolved. Set aside to cool.
Now weigh out the soapmaking oilsusing a digital scaleand combine in a stainless steel pot. Heat until melted,then remove from heat and set aside. Measure out 5.8 fluid ounces of your strong coffee you made the night beforeandsetaside.
When the lye-water and soapmaking oils havecooled to around 90°F you’re ready to make this natural homemade coffeesoap recipe.
Begin by adding the coffee concentrateto the melted oils.Mix with astick blender until the coffeeisevenly distributed.
Now slowly pour the lye-water into the soapmaking oils. Mix with a stick blenderuntil you reach a light trace. Add the essential oil oil or fragrance oil if you are scenting your soap and mix again to fully incorporate the fragrance. (If you’d like to add coffee grounds to your homemade coffee soap for exfoliation, you would do this now or in the beginning when you added the coffee to the oils.) Bring the soap to a medium trace.
Pour the soap into your prepared soap mold– you can add whole coffee beans to the top of the soap at this point if desired for visual interest – then immediately place the mold in the refrigerator. Thishomemade coffee soap recipegot really hot when I made it thereforekeeping itcool will prevent it fromvolcano-ing over or cracking on top as it goes through the saponification process. (My soap did still gel even inside the fridge.)
The next dayunmold your homemade soap loafand cut into bars. Allow bars to cure 4-6 weeksbefore use, then wrap and label as desired.
