Groundhog Day Craft for Kids

This Groundhog Day craft is great to make together, but if you have younger kids or want to have him ready to go,you can always create the groundhog in advance and have your kids dress him up and decorate his hole!

Supplies Needed:

  • 6 brown pom poms (2 large, 4 small)
  • Craft foam (brown, pink, green, and white)
  • Googly eyes (just 2)
  • A piece of cardboard (approximately 5 x 5)
  • Paper cup
  • Popsicle stick
  • Crayons
  • Glue
  • Scissors

How to Make the Groundhog Day Craft

1. First, grab your pieces of craft foam. We will be cutting out the ears, nose, and teeth from this.

  • Carefully cut two half-moon shapes out of the brown for his ears.
  • Cut an oval out of the pink for his nose.
  • Cut a half oval out of the white for his teeth. For this one, you will also draw a black line down the center to divide his two front teeth.

2.For his body, get your six pom poms. You will glue the two larger ones together. Add the four smaller ones for hands and feet (two on the sides and two at the bottom).

3.Next, grab the glue and stickon those craft foam ears, nose, and teeth onto the top of the larger pom pom. Also, add in the googly eyes above the nose.

4. Glue a popsicle stick to the back side of your groundhog. At this point, we are safe to set him aside to dry.

5. Grab your piece of cardboard. The size is up to you, however big you want the grass area around his hole to be – but also large enough for the paper cup to fit onto. Cut a circle out of the center of the cardboard (make sure it is big enough for the groundhog – we made a misjudgment in size and had to make some adjustments when he couldn’t come out to greet us).

6. Glue your paper cup to one side of the cardboard. Make it so it is centered around the hole you just cut out.

7. Cut a small slit into the bottom of the paper cup – big enough to slide the popsicle stick through.

8. Now, make sure the groundhogis dry. Place him into his hole and slide the end of the popsicle stick into that slit you just made.

9. We need to decorate the surroundings of the groundhog’shole – we wouldn’t want him coming up to boring old cardboard. Grab your crayons and color. We also threw up a sign so everything knows wholives in this little hole (we named ourgroundhogWilly!).

10. Cut a small half-moon out of the leftover cardboard. We will attach this to the bottom of our popsicle stick so it doesn’t slide through the hole. Most cardboard is made of two layers, so simply put some glue at the end of your popsicle stick and push it in between these two layers.

Lastly, let everything sit and dry. Once we are all dry and ready, it’s time for the fun!
