What You’ll Need

Are you ready to make the best homemade pizza dough ever? Here is what you will need to get started:

  • warm water (110 degrees F.)- You’ll use the warm water to activate the yeast.
  • Active Dry Yeast– Active dry yeast is used in making homemade breads and pizza dough. Find it in the baking isle of the grocery store.
  • granulated sugar– This fine sugar gives just a little sweetness to the pizza crust. Not much.
  • all-purpose flour– Flour is the main dry ingredient in the pizza crust.
  • extra virgin olive oil– Extra virgin olive oil is added to the dough recipe. Gives a nice flavor.
  • kosher salt– Kosher salt is a course salt is commonly used in cooking and baking. I prefer it over table salt.
  • garlic salt– Lawry’s is my favorite brand of garlic salt if you can find it.

How To Make Pizza with Homemade Dough

  1. Proof the yeast. Place warm water, yeast and sugar into bowl of a stand mixer with dough hook attachment attached. Mix gently then let sit until doubled in size, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add remaining dough ingredients. With mixer on low, add flour, olive oil, salt and garlic salt.
  3. Knead the dough. Scrape sides of bowl and let mixer knead dough for 5 minutes. Dough should have the sides of the bowl cleaned. Add sprinkles of flour or water if needed to get the bowl cleaned while kneading.
  4. Shape into a ball. After 5 minutes of kneading, remove dough from mixing bowl with floured hands (put a small amount of flour in your hands and rub together), and transfer to a floured countertop. Fold dough over itself a couple times then form into a round ball. From here, you can use the dough to make pizza and calzones.
  5. Assemble your pizza. When ready, place dough onto a pizza pan, pressing to a 12 inch round, or larger for a more thin crust. Spoon pizza sauce of your choice over dough leaving a 1 inch border around edges. Top with shredded mozzarella cheese and toppings of your choice.
  6. Bake the pizza. Bake in a preheated oven at 400 degrees F. for 15 minutes, until crust is cooked through. Remove and let cool for 5 minutes before slicing.

Tips For Success

This pizza dough recipe is incredibly easy, but it never hurts to have a few tips in your back pocket! Here is my advice to make sure you make the absolute best dough for your pizza:

  1. Make sure your water is warm enough before starting recipe. It should be 110 degrees F. Mine is often times even warmer and the recipe works great too. Test it with your finger and it would be too hot for a baby bottle, then it is too hot for the yeast!
  2. Check expiration date of your Active Dry Yeast. Usually shelf life is about 1 year. You don’t want to use an expired yeast as it won’t work as well.
  3. Flour your hands before handling the dough when it’s done. It makes your life so much easier, no sticking 🙂

How To Serve

Pizza can be it’s own main dish or try serving with my Cheesy Pizza Bread as a side for dipping into some warmed marinara sauce or Ranch Dressing.

Storing Leftovers

Store any leftover pizza slices in an airtight container for up to 4 days in the refrigerator. Reheat on a heat proof plate covered in the microwave for 45-60 seconds or until hot. I like to also reheat my pizza leftovers in an air fryer at 400 degrees F. for 4-5 minutes until hot. This gives you a nice crispy crust.

You Can Also Make Calzones with this Pizza Dough!

Use this pizza dough recipe to make Calzones with your favorite pizza sauce toppings inside.

  • Roll out the pizza dough like you would to make a round pizza, but put toppings and sauce over just one half leaving 1 inch border where you are filling.
  • Carefully fold crust over filled side and take the tines of a fork to press firmly around edges. I dip my fork in olive oil to prevent sticking.
  • Brush top of calzone with olive oil, sprinkle with Parmesan Cheese and a sprinkle of Garlic Salt.
  • Bake at 400 degrees F. for 15 minutes.
  • Remove and cut into slices.

That’s it! Bet you didn’t realize that making pizza dough also meant you could make calzones in your own kitchen. 🙂
